Turn The Page ... Tuesday

Sequels & Series

Given it is August, the 'dog days of summer', I thought Spencer Quinn's books were perfect to pick up and read. I fell in love with Chet, the almost a police dog with mismatched ears. The observations of this four legged detective are hysterical and often right on.  If you have a pet you will most definitely look at them a bit different (not to mention wonder if they have you all figured out).  Dog On It (book 1) and Thereby Hangs A Tail (book 2) are a fun summer/beach read. Dog On It is is a bit lighter on the language and the mystery isn't as dark compared Thereby. Don't let that scare you off - Chett's antics are worth the read.

From Amazon:

"Chet might have flunked out of police school (“I’d been the best leaper in K-9 class, which had led to all the trouble in a way I couldn’t remember exactly, although blood was involved”), but he’s a detective through and through. In Dog On It, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of a teenaged girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. Readers will be instantly captivated by Chet’s doggy ways and his endearingly hard-boiled voice. Full of heart and occasionally prone to mischief, he is intensely loyal to Bernie, who, though distracted by issues that Chet has difficulty understanding—like divorce, cash flow, and child custody—is enormously likeable himself, in his flawed, all-too-human way. There’s genuine suspense and intrigue, combined with humor and deep insight into the bond between dog and man."

There's a third book that I'll get to one day I'm sure.  Chet is just too irresistible.

Bonus Books

Get your Kleenex ready and buy this book. It's ok - go right now and try to track down Me Before You and order it -  right now (you might have to get it from Europe).  Uh huh. It's that good.  This post will still be here. What? You want a review/description? Oh. Ok.

This is hands down one of my most ever favorite fantastic books I have ever read.  It haunted me well after I read it. I couldn't stop thinking about the characters.

Ready to order it now?

From Amazon:

"Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane. Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time."

Have you ordered it yet? While you are at it you might want to order some of the authors other books. I have. If she writes everything with such soul piercing honesty, truth, and love like she did this book - how could I resist?!

I snagged this book because it was based on a true story and was set in Virginia. The Reservoir starts out with a bang ...

From Amazon:

"On an early spring morning in Richmond, Virginia, in the year 1885, a young pregnant woman is found floating in the city reservoir. It appears that she has committed suicide, but there are curious clues at the scene that suggest foul play. The case attracts local attention, and an eccentric group of men collaborate to solve the crime. Detective Jack Wren lurks in the shadows, weaseling his way into the investigation and intimidating witnesses. Policeman Daniel Cincinnatus Richardson, on the brink of retirement, catches the case and relentlessly pursues it to its sorrowful conclusion. As the identity of the girl, Lillie, is revealed, her dark family history comes to light, and the investigation focuses on her tumultuous affair with Tommie Cluverius.
Tommie, an ambitious young lawyer, is the pride and joy of his family and the polar opposite of his brother Willie, a quiet, humble farmer. Though both men loved Lillie, it’s Tommie’s reckless affair that thrusts his family into the spotlight. With Lillie dead, Willie must decide how far to trust Tommie, and whether he ever understood him at all. Told through accumulating revelations, Tommie’s story finally ends in a riveting courtroom climax."

I really liked this book - it had be scratching my head trying to figure out who really done it. It's sad to know that indeed this story is not just a story but a tragic tale.

What have you been reading?

"The Reservoir" sounds like my kind of book. They are always better if based on true stories.
