Nothing To Eat In This House Syndrome

I hear you laughing ... you say/hear that in your house too huh? Well no more I say! Let's fill our pantries, fridges, and bellies with meaningful, wholesome food!

As flighty as I can be at times, I can also be just as ... ahem ... uptight. I like lists. I like to plan. I love surprises but not at 5 o'clock when I'm trying to figure out dinner (especially when you've been snowed in and can't get to the store with out calling in reinforcements).

I've come up with system that works for me and I hope will work for you too. I sit down with my cook books and come up with a menu for two weeks at a time. I like to have a plan for my cilantro or my left over chicken. I don't want our Mustgo (what ever 'must go' from the fridge) to go to waste. I find the more often I am at the grocery store, the more I spend thus the two week plan.

So here's what I came up with.

I like to print these on 5 X 8 note cards. The size is just right to post on the fridge and to carry in the store.

The grocery list is arranged in the order of my local Wal-Mart so it makes my 'journey' a little shorter.

I have a few options for you to download. Since they are not PDF documents (they are in Word) feel free to tweek these to suit your own needs. Here are the links:

So ... what's for supper?

I always end up putting left overs in the fridge and then forgetting all about them - bad habit I know

This is something I really struggle with. i just hate to make out menus and when I sit down and try I just go blank and can't seem to remember anything I have cooked in the past. It's terrible. I think I need to start off with a list of the meals I make as I make them and work from there. I have never been good at this.

You're one organized Mama. I have a lot of bad shopping habits that end up costing me money or just result in wastefulness. You can be my role model!

Good for you Adrienne! Planning and list making are two great ways to save time and money! I have always done a menu, then from that a list. It relieves so much of the "what's for dinner tonight" stress! Well worth the time and effort. I have a binder where I keep found recipes in page protectors, then I also have my old stand-by cookbooks that are timeless. I also keep a page in the front of my binder with a list of all the meals I cook so when it's time to make that menu, I can just skim through the list and pick out what I want to make, usually based on what on sale or what I have stocked in the freezer or pantry. I break the meals down into categories too, like leftover chicken, on the grill, meatless, which makes the planning even easier. A whole oven stuffer roaster for dinner Sunday night becomes chicken and rice casserole the next night and chicken vegetable soup the night after that. Then of course the leftover night is my favorite...no cooking, just heating up and serving!

I like your printable lists too!

I adore the fact that you use the term "Mustgo" - I grew up hearing my mom utter the term at least once a week. Unfortunately (as a typical kid), mustgo nights were my least favorite. I didn't realize anyone else used it!! I guess we were less quirky than I thought!!

I really like the header to the menu plan, "You are what you eat". Good words for someone that is laboring to eat better!!! Thanks for sharing this. ~

I love your lists!! Pefect! I have been trying for years just to get my family to write non-food items on a different part of the shopping list than the food items. Shouldn't be so hard!!

Thanks for sharing those lists! They look a lot nicer than my notepads and scraps of paper...
I try to shop once a week only, and I plan out what I'm gonna cook, too. I find that as time goes on, I get less and less creative. I just don't have the time to muck around with new recipes, even though I love to cook and try new things. So, penne pasta with ready-made meatballs and a jar of Ragu it is!
